Piazza dell'Erbe & Piazza dei Signori

Tourists are always keen on traveling around historic places. Piaza delle Erbe is one of the most visited squares in Italy because of its ancient buildings and monuments. Nowadays, Piaza delle Erbe is the political and economical center of Verona.

The Piazza delle Erbe is between via Mazzini and Corso Porta Borsari, in Roman Empire’s times there was a Roman forum. Square of Herbs is the literal translation for Piazza delle Erbe, since in this huge local market you can buy all types of herbs. The whole place has the aroma of herbs; however all stands not only sell herbs. The square is surrounded by all kinds of stands where you can buy Veronese souvenirs and clothes among others.

In the middle of the square the sculpture called Virgin of Verona is located, in the beautiful Madonna Verona Fountain made by Cansignorio; this statue is the main attraction of the whole square, and every tourist takes photographs of the square and of the fountain, obviously.

The Piazza dei Signori is also known as “Verona heart” and has many palaces of great architectural and historical importance; its historic monuments show the importance of this city, which was a political and administrative center in ancient times. Palazzo del Capitaniato, the Loggia del Consiglio and the Palazzo del Comune are located in Piazza dei Signori, most of them have the same architectural style with elegant arches that date back from 14th century. In the middle of the Piazza dei Signori you’ll find a monument of Dante (1865). In recent years, Roman mosaics and other findings were discovered there.
