Many kinds of seafood are the base for the culinary art in Venice. One of the most representative dishes is fish risotto that is prepared in diverse ways. The risotto alle seppie is the strangest type because it has a bright black color as a result of the cuttlefish cooked in its own ink.
In addition, Venice food is famous for its soups too. The most recommended one is the brodetto di pesce that is cooked with a variety of fish like cuttlefish, octopus and squid. The great longstanding tradition in Venice is to marinate the fish to conserve it for a long time before eating it, and the typical dish is the sarde in saor (marinated sardines).
There are many ways to cook this dish but all of them have a few simple procedures: boiling, frying, grilling, and oven-cooking. You can season it as you like but there are some condiments that are essential like: olive oil, garlic, herbs, parsley and vinegar.
To find good quality there are many restaurants and “trattorie” in Venice. You can also find “rosticcerie” that is like a snack bar where you can eat good food for a good price. These places are crowded at lunchtime by youngsters because they have pastas and pizzas that are well-known in Italy. You also try tasteful but simple traditional recipes like “risi e bisi” (rice with peas and ham).
