Painting & Sculpture: The twentieth century

The twentieth century had a radical artistic change in Italy; from 1900 and in previous years many movements such as Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, surrealism and modernism among others arose.

Expressionism was a modernist movement by which artists represented emotions and meaning rather than reality, they used to paint emotional effects distorting faces and bodies.

Futurism and cubism left old ideas behind and represented technology, dynamism; the movement was founded by Marinetti and ended with his death. Futurism came after the industrial revolution; you can notice the total disassociation from previous art periods, it was all about man and the humanity trying to conquer nature.

Surrealism was founded to represent a visionary world, using the abstract, exposing the philological truth; one of the most representative artists of this movement was Salvador Dali.

Modernism was represented by Pablo Picasso sculptures, that combined a variety of objects to form a unity; he began 3D sculpture, this combination of different objects was emblematic of the early 20th century.
