The origin of Naples dates back to 9th B.C., when Naples was known as Parthenope, a Greek colony, and over time the name changed to Neápolis which means new city in 6th century B.C.

Neápolis was governed under the Roma Empire and had popularity among Emperors, due to the coastline, climate and luxury; which made the city enjoyed economical prosperity as well as cultural development.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Naples was dominated by the Byzantine Empire, and they created the Duchy of Naples and considered it one of the most important places by Byzantine governors, therefore the situation allowed Naples to develop the economy and culture even further.

The Normans took over of Naples and the city was involved in a combination of peace and battles which ended in the next government and the foundation of the first state university in the world, the University of Naples.

After the government of Normans, the Anjou dynasty increased the cultural and artistic production in Naples, by the construction of monuments; the city of Naples was controlled by Austrian too, until they became an independent kingdom; in 1806, by the influence of Napoleon the throne was occupied by his brother Guissepe which gives the French influence to the city.

After the Congress of Vienna Naples and Sicily formed part of a unique kingdom, until Garibaldi returned to the city and the people decided to be part of the Kingdom of Italy as part of the Italian Unification.
