Once you decide to move to Italy, you must think in your accommodation. You can rent or buy a department or house, in order to find one; we invite you to read the section real estate in our guide.

If you already have a department or house where to live in, it is for sure you know something about the city where it is located. Can you imagine being there? Of course, one of the first things you will need is to communicate with local people. If you want to integrate well in the Italian society, then you must learn the Italian language. You can get a good command of the language working hard on it. If you do that before arriving in Italy, it would be great. (Visit Italian language guide to learn this language online)

Remember that moving to another country involves also knowing about their laws, customs, education system, health system etc. so reading some information about this can help you.

Regarding permits and visas, if you are planning to travel to Italy for a short time, then getting a three-month permit will be enough. It can be renewed for another three months. On the other hand, if you think to stay more than six months, you will be required to get a long stay permit (you will be required to have a visa). Two of the different visas are:
  • Residency visas: This visa requires you to have an independent income. It won’t allow you to work in Italy, so you will have to prove you have enough money for your support during your staying. The ownership of a home or a rental agreement will be needed.
  • Work visas: From all the kinds of visas it is the most difficult to obtain. It is divided according to the types of applicants: independent work (freelancers, consultants, etc), dependent work (employers employed by Italian companies) and performing arts work (for musicians and actors). In order to obtain this visa, you must have letters saying that an Italian company intends to hire you.

Moving is more than packing all your stuff in cardboard boxes, moving means to leave a place and its memories, to come to a new environment and be around new people. This process can be usually stressful and overwhelming, but taking in mind the following things can be a good idea:

  • The first thing to do when moving, is to sort and organize your belongings.
  • Get rid of everything that is not useful to your new home, fill boxes with items to be donated or go to the trash.
  • Before you start packing things keep a list of everything you need to have at hand such as buying boxes, labels, etc.
  • Every time you fill a box, seal it properly and make sure to put a label stating the contents of the box and the room in the new house they should be allocated. It is also important to note the position where the box should be carried in case there are fragile things that cannot move much.
  • Objects must be grouped according to their type during the packing process.
  • Always carry a list of things that need to be done and make sure to cross out what has been done.
  • Once the last thing is already on the moving truck check every corner of the house to make sure you have not forgotten anything.
