Venice is the capital of the region Veneto. The city is known as "the city of canals", is located in the northeast of Italy above a set of islands that extends over a marshy lagoon in the Adriatic Sea, between the mouths of the Po River on the south and Piave River on the north.

The city is crossed by 177 rivers and comprises 120 small islands that are bonded for 455 bridges. Venice is divided into six areas or "sestiere". These are Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, San Marco and Castello. Each sestiere was administered by a procurator and his staff.

The largest lagoon islands in Venice are: Torcello, Murano, Burano, San Servolo, La Zueca,San Giorgio Maggiore, Pellestrina, Poveglia, San Clemente, San Francesco del Deserto, San Lazaro degli Armeni, San Michele dei Morti, Santa Maria della Grazia, Sant'Erasmo, Le Vignole,Lido di Venezia, La Giudecca.
