Eating & Drinking in Venice

The culinary art in Venice is based largely on seafood and one of the most representative dishes is fish risotto which comes in a variety of forms, the strangest one is the risotto alle seppie with a bright black color that's a result of the cuttlefish being cooked in its own ink.
But the Venice food is famous also for its soups (particularly in Caorle area, called brodetto di pesce) recommended where the cephaloped variety of fish concerns cuttlefish, octopus and squid. A very longstanding tradition where Venice is concerned, fish was marinated in order to conserve it for long periods before eating, and we can see this tradition in the typical dish called sarde in saor (marinated sardines). The ways of cooking fish have remained rooted to a few simple procedures: boiling, frying, grilling and oven cooking. The seasonings used are also simple but tasty: olive oil, vinegar, garlic, parsley and herbs.
Venice is crowded with restaurants and "trattorie", simpler eating places, but mostly good quality. Besides these, you can discover the so-called "rosticcerie", the Italian variety of a snack bar where they serve plates of good food for a good price. These are generally crowded with youngsters during lunchtime. Besides the well-known pastas and pizzas, a lot of places serve dishes containing fish finished off with "polenta", a corn-based basis of various meals. Try at least once simple though tasteful traditional recipes such as "risi e bisi" (rice with peas and ham). Venice is, of course, also famous for its "patisserie". Sweets, cakes and ice creams in all sorts and sizes are a must for both locals and tourists.
Of course you will find some international restaurants as well, but as everybody knows, Italy is a food paradise and we strictly recommend the local cuisine.
