Painting & Sculpture: The Middle Ages


Middle-Age artists mainly used symbolism and religious images that come from Christian times, most churches and palaces count with paintings and sculptures of religious subjects.

In the Middle Ages, the byzantine style was conservative and they produced frescoes, Romanesque sculpture was more energetic and expressive whereas Gothic sculpture was natural and realistic, but keeping Christian themes.

Paintings in the Middle Ages used different materials; they used frescoes as in other periods, they used illustrated manuscripts, it’s believed that most of them were painted in monasteries as they were cultural centers, they also copied religious books; after that, with the predominant Gothic Period, the glass painting was practiced.
