Painting & Sculpture: Early Christian art

Early Christian art had its beginnings when Christians were persecuted so they used pagan iconography such as the peacock, Lamb, and others and took styles from Roman art.

Christians use paintings for their catacombs’ ceilings using the symbolic iconography which with time was adapted to Christian needs; Christians were persecuted until the 313 year when the Emperor Constantine decreed indulgence for this sect, since then this religion has become famous.

At that time, painting and sculpture were dedicated to portrait scenes from Jesus life though keeping the iconography used from early times of Christianity, they began to develop and produce art works, to educate new members and reflect by the creation of art: the importance of religion.
