Looking for a job can be a very stressful situation. The job search can provoke strong emotions like fear, anger, challenge, denial, depression, excitement, and joy.

The first thing you have to do in order to find a job is to evaluate yourself, discover your interests and skills. Other thing that is very important before looking for a job is to evaluate the experience that you have in your profession.

To make a self-assessment is the best choice, finding your skills and your weaknesses will help you choose the right job in order to avoid unwanted jobs and frustration at your workplace.

Before applying for a job you have to be conscious that you are capable for the job, and you have enough experience to perform it.

Resume  

A resume or résumé is an individual document, used to show both, personal background and skills. Résumés are mainly used to get a new employment. A typical résumé contains a summary of relevant job experience and education. The résumé is equivalent to the curriculum vitae in many countries.

Before writing your resume, you have to identify the job requirements, make a copy of the job description and clearly identify how you meet those qualifications and skills required for the position.

Recommendations:
  • The résumé should contain the candidate´s history and skills, be concise, adequate and accurate. No longer than two pages. See resume templates.
  • Make a resume that contains the potential keywords that the employers are looking for, make heavy use of active verbs, and display contents in a flattering manner. See resume examples.
  • Since employers are using Internet-based job search engines. Pay close attention to keywords used to identify the required qualifications, skills, experience and education and use these keywords in your resume sample and cover letter.
  • Match your qualifications to those advertised or to the statement of qualifications.
  • Back up your qualifications by using specific examples in the body of your resume.
  • Be sure to have the names, contact information and consent of at least three references at hand.
  • Always include a cover letter.

Cover Letter

Accompanying your résumé or curriculum vitae, a cover letter or a letter of motivation is required as an introduction for your resume.
The cover letter is an introductory letter presented to potential employers, explaining one´s suitability for the desired position, this letter works as a marketing tool; it’s the first chance to make a good impression.

Recommendations:
  • Send the letter to the person in charge of the hiring process by including his/her name and his/her title. Do not use sir or madam.
  • Make sure that your letter is free of typos and grammatical errors.
  • Use action verbs to convey warmth and enthusiasm.
  • Describe how your skills, abilities and personal suitability will benefit the organization.

Job Interview
For getting a job, it is necessary to pass the job interview successfully. The interview can be formal, informal, screening, multiple, situational or group-like. It’s necessary for you to be ready for an interview as you will be less anxious and have more chances to be hired.

Recommendations:
  • Dress appropriately for the company you are applying to.
  • Arrive early in order to avoid setbacks.
  • Greet the receptionist in a politely and friendly manner.
  • Look for the most-commonly asked questions in the interview. Practice answering them.
  • Practice answering the questions with a friend or a career counselor or in front of a mirror.
  • Practice speaking rapidly, loudly and softly in order to gain confidence.
  • Research the organization before going for the interview.
  • During the interview stay calm and relax. If you prefer, take some water with you.
  • Bring extra copies of your resume with you and your list of references.
  • Follow-up with a thank-you note for the interviewer's time.
  • If you don’t get the job. Cheer up! There will always be job offers.
