Umbria is one of the 20 Regions of Italy. The capital is Perugia. It has an area of 8,456 kmē and about 900,000 inhabitants. Umbria is a region of Central Italy, bordered by Tuscany to the west, the Marche to the east and Lazio to the south. This region is for the most part hilly or mountainous. This region presents itself at first sight as a region where the numerous medieval cities blend with exuberant rolling hills. For this reason, Umbria is well known as the "Green Heart of Italy". This territory possess a huge cultural patrimony from the priceless museums of Perugia, Todi, Foligno and Montefalco, to the modern art galleries in Cittā di Castello, as well as the specialised wine and ceramic museums respectively in Torgiano and Deruta. Umbria is the host to many wonderful artistic and historical relics. Beautiful examples of medieval and Renaissance art can be found in nearly every small town. Wonderful frescos such as those in the famous St. Francis basilica are well preserved and lovingly adored by the people of the region. In Umbria there are also many aquatic resources such as Lake Trasimeno, Lake Piediluco, Lake Corbara and the river Tiber, the longest river that goes through the region from north to south. The breathtaking Marmore Falls are formed by the union of both the rivers Nera and Velino near the city of Terni.

Also underground one can discover many caves and springs that are interesting from a speleological point of view. This spring water is commercialized as mineral water and also used for therapeutic purposes. Umbria is famous for its natural delicious and simple cuisine. The principle products from the region include sausages, cheese, dairy products, legumes and truffles. The region's climate favours the cultivation of grape vines allowing for the production of world famous wines from Orvieto, Torgiano, Montefalco. To increase the notoriety of the region there are many events during the year, such as Umbria Jazz, the Two World Festival, the Sacred Music Festival, the Nations Festival.

Umbria is a modest region with intense ties to its cultural past. It is scenic and beautiful. Visiting Umbria is like seeing history first hand and experiencing the world as it was centuries ago. There is no better place to enjoy the romanticism of the past with the conveniences of the future while avoiding the chaos of bustling cities. From misting waterfalls and medieval castles, to ancient ruins and glorious architecture, to religious relicts and stunning artworks, from olive groves and fine wine: Umbria has everything Italian.
